Comparative Governments There are many systems of government around the world that function in different ways. The three major components of a government are power, law-making, and the political process. These elements vary depending on the specific form of government and how it runs. Democracy is defined as a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives. The United States is known for its use of representative democracy. However, America’s use of this system is only one example, as there is an abundance of differing forms of government. Democracy has similarities and also differences from other types of governments around the world.
