After the Civil war ended in 1865, the Statesn Congress established the Freedmens Bureau to aid Americas 4,000,000 newly freed slaves. This Bureau was, in effect, the countrys first welfare system. It helped African Americans in many vast ways, and began them on the path to the eventual equality and education they bear today. Once freed, slaves did not have any place in the world. The faced a huge amount of racism, had few laws defend them, little to no income, confounded family members, and no education or job skills other than farming.
