Africans and Dutch Settlements in South Africa- When the Dutch began subsidence in southern Africa in the mid-seventeenth century, they encountered a mix of African societies that had populated the region for many centuries. The earliest inhabitants of South Africa were San hunters and gatherers and Khoikhoi pastoralists. These were followed by Bantu-speaking farmers who crossed the Limpopo River around the third century of the greens Era. The Khoikhoi were the first to make contact with European seafarers. The gradual expansion of company farms into the interior alarmed the Khoikhoi, who saw their grazing lands exist by Dutch takeover. As wars broke out with Khoikhoi groups in the Cape peninsula, the Dutch settlers steadily began conquering Khoikhoi territory farther and farther from the company settlement. Although for most of the eighteenth century Khoikhoi and San bands resisted Boer expansion, by 1800 the Boers had extended the colonys boundaries 300 miles north and cholecalciferol miles east along the Indian Ocean soaring.
